United join the race for Toure

Reports in the Spanish press claim that Manchester United are preparing a bid for Barcelona's defensive midfielder Yaya Toure.

The Red Devils are apparently set to offer €21 million to prise Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure away from the Nou Camp.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson is understood to be keen to strengthen United's midfield given the constant injuries plaguing Owen Hargreaves and the loss of form from the likes of Michael Carrick and Anderson.

While the United coach has publicly stated that he will only be making one more signing this season, after the club secured the services of Mexican striker Javi Hernandez and Fulham defender Chris Smalling, a report in Spanish publication Sport says that Ferguson has made inquiries about Toure.

While Barca coach Pep Guardiola is said to be keen to retain the services of the 27-year old Ivorian, reports on Wednesday stated that the Catalan outfit would consider releasing the player for a fee of €30-35 million.

Toure is believed to be seeking a move away from the Nou Camp and has been linked with both Chelsea and Arsenal over the past few weeks.

Barcelona have finally contacted Arsenal about Cesc Fabregas - and were immediately told he is not for sale at any price.
The Spanish giants have still not lodged an official bid for the want-away Gunners captain but have finally made a tentative enquiry.
But Arsenal have told Barcelona that they are wasting their time, that they will not even enter negotiations or discussions of any kind and that Fabregas is going nowhere. They also made it clear not to bother contacting them again.
Arsenal's strong response has dealt a massive blow to their hopes of signing Fabregas, who has five years left on his contract.

Aqualani to stay at liverpool?

ALBERTO AQUILANI has vowed to stay at Liverpool and repay the club for their faith in him.

The Italian midfielder's first season at Anfield was a disappointment following his £17million move from Roma last summer.

An ankle injury stopped him making his debut until late October and he made just 13 starts all season as Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2003.

His lack of appearances made some believe there was truth in the rumours he would make a swift return to Italy with Juventus.

But Aquilani, 25, vowed he is determined to stay and prove his worth to Reds boss Rafa Benitez.

He said: "I am staying at Liverpool to make up for many things. I have finally recovered from my ankle injury.

"Juve have approached me in the past and now I'm reading of their interest, but I really don't know anything about it."

United complete Hernandez signing

Manchester United have completed the deal to sign Javier Hernandez after the Mexico striker was granted a work permit.

United last month agreed a fee with Mexican side Guadalajara for the 22-year-old before the player also completed a medical and agreed personal terms.
United had only been awaiting confirmation of his work permit to complete his transfer, which will go through on July 1.

Arsenal are interested in Lorient’s £8m-rated centre back Laurent Koscielny, 24, who is eligible to play for for Poland and France.
The 6ft 1in defender became an integral part of Lorient's defence, as the Ligue 1 outfit finished seventh in the table.
Koscielny, who played 35 times last season, moved from Tours to Lorient last summer for around £1.2m.

Spurs eye Richards bid

MICAH RICHARDS could make a £9million summer switch to Spurs.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has been assessing Richards' situation at Manchester City and knows that the defender would be interested in a move.

Richards missed out on Fabio Capello's provisional World Cup 30 after an indifferent couple of seasons but believes he has got his focus properly back now.

At 21, a more mature Richards is determined to push his way into the international fold again next season and build on the 11 caps he won as an exciting teenager.

Although Richards has played both centre-back and right-back, Redknapp sees him first and foremost as an attacking full-back who can take over from Croatia's Vedran Corluka.

But before Tottenham can bid for Richards they have to raise money by making sales.

Scottish international full-back Alan Hutton, who has flopped at White Hart Lane, could be one of the first players to go.

He spent part of last season on loan at Sunderland and the Black Cats are keen to take him on full-time.

Manager Harry Redknapp has shown an interest in the former England Under 21 centre half as he seeks to add to his defensive options ahead of next season's Champions League campaign.

London-born Davies, 25, has dropped down the pecking order at Villa Park and would jump at the chance to play top European football at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham have no shortage of central defenders but there are worries over the fitness of Ledley King's knees while Jonathan Woodgate is battling to overcome a groin problem and former Luton and West Bromwich skipper Davies would provide more than adequate cover.
He was signed by Villa manager Martin O'Neill for £11m two seasons ago but a shoulder injury last year, that eventually required surgery, has seen him drop down the firstteam pecking order behind James Collins, Carlos Cuellar and Richard Dunne.
Davies remains shy of the 60-game mark he needs to trigger a new contract at Villa Park and his representatives were told during a post-season meeting with O'Neill that he could be sacrificed as the Villa boss has priorities in other areas of the side and needs to raise funds before he can buy new players.

Tottenham will hold talks with the agent of Luka Modric over a new contract in a bid to keep the Croatia playmaker out of the clutches of Chelsea.
Carlo Ancelotti, the Chelsea manager, is understood to be ready to pay upwards of £25m for Modric following his starring role for Tottenham this season.
But Redknapp is in no mood to lose one of his best players after qualifying for the Champions League. Tottenham officials will meet Modric's agent, Zdravko Mamic, before the weekend to discuss improving and lengthening the 24-year-old midfielder's contract, which has three-years left to run and earns him about £45,000-a-week.
Spurs may need to offer him a deal in the region of £70,000-a-week, an increase which will see him join the club's top earners King, Woodgate and Robbie Keane.

Nikola Zigic completes 6m Birmingham City deal

Nikola Zigic has landed himself a tall order - finding the goals to fire Birmingham City upwards after completing a £6million switch from Valencia.
The giant Serbia striker has agreed a four-year deal with the St Andrew's club, becoming Alex McLeish’s third signing of the close season.
Zigic stands at almost 6ft 8in - he doesn’t exactly dwarf Spurs’ Peter Crouch, but the England international has finally found someone in the Barclays Premier League to look up to. Albeit by less than an inch.

The Kop striker's agent, Jose Antonio Peton, last night insisted: "For the moment I can assure fans that Fernando will continue at Liverpool next season."

And that is bad news for Manchester City and Chelsea who would both love to have the Spanish World Cup star on their books.

Peton added: "Everything is down to Liverpool's attitude but, for the time being, Fernando is happy at the club and has a good contract.

"Liverpool have not spoken to us about his future, so he is just concentrating on playing at the World Cup."

Torres, 26, is still battling to make Spain's World Cup opener against Switzerland on June 16 after a season dogged by hernia, hamstring and knee problems.

He has not played since April when a second bout of knee surgery left him in a race to be fit in time for South Africa.

And, last night, Torres conceded how the pressure of coping with expectancy on top of his injuries turned last season into a horror show at Anfield.

He revealed: "It's been very difficult. When you start out, you hope you can win titles and not have injuries.

"Instead it has been just the opposite. But in football there is always tomorrow.

"So I have put aside the club and the bad season, and I want to finish in the best way possible by making history with my country at the World Cup.

"I am happy with the progress of my injury and, God willing, I'll be 100 per cent for our first game of the World Cup."

One man definitely leaving Liverpool, though, is left-back Fabio Aurelio, 30, who rejected a pay-as-you-play deal after a season decimated by injuries.

Aurelio's contract runs out on Tuesday and he will go with a glowing reference from boss Rafa Benitez.

The Liverpool chief, who signed Aurelio from Valencia four years ago, said: "We had been trying to work something out with regards an extension and it was a pity we couldn't.

"He has given us absolutely fantastic service. Fabio is a top professional, a great player and a really good lad."

Valencia issue David Silva warning

Manchester United and Real Madrid have been warned that Valencia star David Silva is not for sale.

The pair have been reportedly eyeing £30million moves for the 24-year-old but Los Che have said the Spain international will not be leaving.
Silva had previously expressed his temptation at a possible move to United, who were thought to be keen on making a close-season swoop.
Club president Manuel Llorente has said the midfielder will not be going anywhere, though, after he helped them secure a third place finish in La Liga.
Valencia recently lost David Villa to Barcelona in what was believed to be a £35million deal and Llorente is keen not to lose another key name.

Patrick Vieira and Karim Benzema have been omitted from France's 30-man preliminary squad for the World Cup.

Vieira returned to the Barclays Premier League to join Manchester City from Inter Milan in January and recovered some of his form, but not enough to impress Les Bleus coach Raymond Domenech.

Benzema, who has had a less than fruitful season with Real Madrid, has also missed out on selection for the squad, as has midfielder Samir Nasri, whose Arsenal team-mates Gael Clichy, William Gallas, Abou Diaby and Bacary Sagna are included.

Franck Ribery, who is sweating over his participation in Bayern Munich's Champions League final with Inter on May 22 with the Bundesliga champions appealing his ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, is included.

Dunga dumps Ronaldinho & Adriano

Ronaldinho and Adriano will both miss the World Cup after being omitted from the 23-man Brazil squad named by Dunga today.

Wolfsburg striker Grafite is the surprise inclusion at the expense of Flamengo's Adriano, while Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes is one of the three goalkeepers named.

Dunga explained Adriano's failure to make the squad was a rational, rather than emotional decision after the former Inter Milan forward was granted numerous chances to impress and failed to do so.

"Adriano was given several opportunities," said Dunga, who lifted the World Cup as captain in 1994 and will now bid for the Selecao's sixth World Cup win.

"There was a moment when we made a decision about the group.

"The group always welcomed Adriano, but there is a moment when reason talks louder than the heart."

The 30-year-old Ronaldinho, who was the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005, has been in good form for AC Milan this season but has missed out on Dunga's squad for the finals in 2010, denying him the chance to add a second World Cup crown to the one he won in 2002.

One of his team-mates in 2002, former Manchester United midfielder Kleberson, has made it into the squad after rediscovering his best form back in Brazil with Flamengo.

The coach also opted to leave out Santos duo Paulo Henrique and Neymar.

Dunga revealed the duo failed to impress enough while on international duty.

"I have to test the players when they are in the national team," he said.

"I follow their form in their clubs, but why didn't you (the media) want them in the squad in December or January?

"These players are enormously talented, but I cannot prepare a national team for 2014 if I have to win today."

AC Milan's Alexandre Pato has also failed to win selection after a less-than-impressive season in Italy.

Inter Milan trio Julio Cesar, Maicon and Lucio will be three of the most important players in the squad after helping the Nerazzurri clinch a berth in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

Brazil have been drawn in Group G alongside North Korea, Ivory Coast and Portugal and Dunga called for the fans to back the team, regardless of their thoughts on him as coach.

"I beg the Brazilian fan that they support us," he said.

"If they don't like me or any other thing, that's fine, but I want him to support us, to be a patriot."

England World Cup 2010 Squad Named: Fabio Capello Picks 30 Man Provisional Selection

England coach Fabio Capello has made several surprise selections in his preliminary 30-man World Cup squad.
Uncapped duo Adam Johnson and Michael Dawson both feature along with Dawson’s Tottenham team-mate Tom Huddlestone.
Jamie Carragher comes out of international retirement, while fellow defender Ledley King and the injured Gareth Barry have also been picked.
Stephen Warnock, Scott Parker and Darren Bent are chosen, with the final 23-man squad to be announced by 1 June.
Under Fifa regulations, Capello is permitted to bring players into his 23-man squad who were not included in the preliminary party.
But that would be an unusual move, meaning the final party he takes to this summer’s finals in South Africa is likely to come from the one he has already named.
England play Mexico at Wembley on 24 May and Japan in Austria six days later as part of a pre-tournament training camp.
That will provide Capello with time to work with a much-changed squad and put the finishing touches to his preparations.
The Italian has included 23-year-old Joe Hart among his three goalkeepers after the Manchester City player enjoyed an outstanding season on loan at Birmingham.
Like Hart, left-backs Leighton Baines of Everton and Aston Villa’s Warnock have one senior cap to their names and are graduates of the England Under-21 side.
There was plenty of speculation over whether Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole would be selected but the 28-year-old has bounced back impressively from cruciate knee ligament damage and a poor run of form.
“I followed Joe Cole for a long time when he was injured and when he started to play he was not so good,” Capello admitted. “But now he’s fit and every game he has played with us he has always been good.”
Capello’s other wide options include fit-again Aaron Lennon of Tottenham, Arsenal’s Theo Walcott and Shaun Wright-Phillips of Manchester City.
He was reportedly set to omit Barry because of the ankle injury that will keep him out until the start of June but the Manchester City midfielder, who has won 20 of his 36 caps under Capello and played in eight of England’s 10 World Cup qualifiers, has been included and will have a fitness check on 24 May.
Capello revealed he tried to persuade Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes to come out of international retirement, but failed.
“We tried to convince him to return but he said no, he’d prefer to stay with his family,” revealed the former Real Madrid and AC Milan manager.
There were rumours England might turn to Owen Hargreaves, the man Barry replaced in the team in September 2007, but a knee problem has restricted the Manchester United midfielder to only one minute of first-team football in 19 months.
Manchester City’s Johnson, Huddlestone, West Ham’s Parker and Villa’s James Milner are also rewarded for fine seasons.
“I met with Hargreaves twice in Manchester but he’s not fit to play and hasn’t played in 18 months,” said Capello. “I trusted him but the last decision was his. I hope he’ll be fit for the European Championship qualifiers in the autumn.”
Fulham’s Bobby Zamora and West Ham’s Carlton Cole both missed out on a striking berth, with Sunderland’s 25-goal frontman Bent, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe of Spurs joining Villa’s Emile Heskey and prolific Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney.
“Zamora was a really important player but we spoke with him and he has a big problem with his Achilles,” Capello added. “He said he can’t play because he can’t train every day.”
The World Cup runs from 11 June to 11 July and England open their Group C campaign against the United States in Rustenburg on 12 June before facing Algeria on 16 June and Slovenia on 23 June.

Crazy Domenech drops Nasri from France squad for World Cup!

Raymond Domenech has been much maligned in France for some of his strange decisions while managing the national team, but surely this must be one of his craziest move ever.

Although Clichy, Sagna and Diaby are all in the France squad to go to South Africa, the midfield maestro Samir Nasri has not been included, despite some excellent performances for Arsenal while Cesc Fabregas was out injured.

The crocked William Gallas, who hasn’t played for Arsenal for months because of his recurring injuries, has been given a chance to prove his fitness ahead of the final selection.

Poor Sami was messed about by Domenech two years ago at the Euro2008 competition, when he was put on standby when Patrick Vieira was injured, only for Domenech to keep the Arsenal legend at the Finals, even though he didn’t recover in time to play.

Bacary Sagna couldn’t help but sympathise with his team-mate. He said: “It’s great to see so many Arsenal players but the news of Nasri has put things in perspective. In these moments there is little one can say. I have not yet called him but no words can soothe him. He misses a World Cup.”

I don’t understand why France kept Domenech on as manager after the team’s dismal performance at the Euros, and he has proved once again that he is an idiot. He will definitely be dismissed once France are embarrassed by his tactics again this summer.

Arsenal rumours May 11th – Campbell, Bonucci, Gallas and Asamoah

There is a good bit of Arsenal transfer news about today, and it is not all good news. It appears that Arsene Wenger has upset William Gallas with his not-generous-enough new contract offer, and the French defender has decided to go off in a huff.

The Sun reports today that Wenger is wasting his time going for new talks with Gallas’ agent, and they quote a “source close to Gallas” as saying “Something seems broken between William and Arsene and it looks possible he will not be at the club next season.” I guess that if Gallas hasn’t signed a contract by now, it is pretty unlikely that he will in the next few days….

But if Gallas goes, and Silvestre is a certainty to join him, then it looks imperative that Sol Campbell stays, or Wenger will be desperate for defenders in the next couple of months. But today it seems that the newly promoted German club St. Pauli have made Campbell a big offer to play in the Bundesliga next season. If Campbell gets tired of waiting for Wenger to make him an offer, Arsenal could be dropped in the proverbial manure. Come on Wenger, pull your finger out!

But perhaps Wenger has other, younger, defenders in mind, as he is being linked with a couple of Italians this morning in TuttoSport. The Bari defender Leonardo Bonucci has had a great season in Italy, and is definitely on the move this summer. He has been variously linked with Man City and some top Italian clubs before today, and last week he sounded like he would prefer to join Inter Milan if Jose Mourinho wanted him. He is currently co-owned by Bari and Genoa, and they will both need to be involved in any transfer dealings.

He is obviously very talented, and Udinese have put a pricetag of 30m euros on him to frighten off any hostile bids. There is no way that Wenger would pay that much so this link is unlikely to be taken any further.

Fulham's Roy Hodgson has been named as the manager of the year by the League Managers' Association.

Hodgson has been recognised by his peers after steering the Cottagers to the Europa League final for the first time in their history as well as taking the London club to 12th in the Barclays Premier League on a limited budget.

Fulham, who also reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, will have played 63 games this term after their prestigious clash with Atletico Madrid having started their European campaign last July.

Tottenham's Harry Redknapp took this season's Premier League manager of the year award after guiding Spurs to fourth place but LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson believes Hodgson's efforts since taking over an ailing Fulham in December 2007 make him a worthy winner of the overall prize.

"Since joining Fulham, Roy has transformed the club's fortunes," said Wilkinson.

"He initially saved them from the brink of relegation then took them to their highest ever league position last season. This year he has capitalised on that platform, achieving remarkable success in this season's Europa League.

"He is highly respected by the LMA members and also on an international level where he has worked his miracles in no fewer than seven countries. He is a great role model for all aspiring managers and coaches and is fully deserving of this recognition."

Newcastle's Chris Hughton is the new Coca-Cola Championship manager of the year for his efforts in taking the club back up at the first attempt, while Norwich's Paul Lambert and Rochdale's Keith Hill have been honoured for their exploits in League One and League Two respectively.

Steve McClaren, enjoying a career renaissance in Holland with FC Twente, was handed the LMA's special merit award, while there were also gongs for Arsenal director Ken Friar, who won the service to football award, and Ron Atkinson, who was inducted to the LMA's Hall of Fame.

Arsene Wenger has stated that he will be chasing experience instead of youth in the transfer window.

Ever since Arsenal's title chances fell away in mid-April, the main media attention has been on how the Frenchman would add to his team over the summer.

Naturally, Wenger has kept his counsel. But, speaking before the weekend, he did suggest that he would target more seasoned stars.

Wenger looking for revenge

Arsene Wenger has his sights set on a revenge meeting with Manchester United or Chelsea in the Champions League Quarter-finals.

Champions League Tuesday Review

Arsenal romped past Porto at the Emirates while Bayern Munich edged past Fiorentian in a thriller in Italy.

Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner put his weekend horror show against Burnely behind him to fire his team into the last eight of the Champions League.

Bendtner, who was widely criticised for his performance on Saturday, opened the scoring for the Gunners in the tenth minute when a clash between Porto defender Fucile and keeper Helton allowed the Dane to slot the ball into an open goal.

Andrei Arshavin, who was lively all night long, set up the second goal when he raced up the left flank and squared the ball to Bendtner for a simple tap in.

Porto had their chances in the first half, most notable when a Gael Clichy error allowed striker Hulk to cut inside the box, but his shot was straight at Manuel Almunia.

The Portuguese side came out fired up in the second half with Hulk and Falco going close for the visitors. Arsenal looked shaky at the back but some individual brilliance from Samir Nasri put the tie beyond doubt.

The Frenchman collected the ball on the right just outside the box, swayed and weaved his way past three defenders before unleashing a fierce shot that went in off the far post.

The visitors ran out of gas after Nasri's stunner and the Gunners ran riot. Arshavin collected the ball in his own half and ran past a couple of Porto players before releasing Emmanuel Eboue who rounded the keeper before coolly slotting the ball in.

Eboue later won a penalty which Bendtner duly converted for his hat-trick - a fitting riposte to his critics.

In Florence, a see-saw tie was settled by an Arjen Robben wonderstrike. Bayern Munich trailed in the 28th minute when Juan Vargas scored for the hosts.

Stevan Jevotic made it 2-0 on the night in the second half, but Mark Van Bommel's strike levelled the tie. However, Jovetic put the Viola up again with a header. The scoreline read 3-1 on the night and 4-3 for the tie in favour of the Italians.

There was more drama to come though. Arjen Robben got the ball on the left side of midfield, cut inside and smashed a spectacular long range shot that put the Germans ahead in the 65th minute on the away goals rule.

Fiortentina were flattened and never really threatened Bayern's goal after that. 4-4 was how the tie ended and Louis van Gaal's men went through by virtue of having scored more away goals.

Bendtner shows his cutting-edge

Nicklas Bendtner insisted Saturday's horror show was not on his mind as he struck a hat-trick in Arsenal's win over Porto.

This was the striker's first hat-trick for Arsenal.

The Dane was derided for a performance against Burnley on Saturday in which he missed a sackful of chances, but he made amends in style as Arsenal claimed a 6-2 aggregate win to book their quarter-final place.

Asked if Saturday had played on his mind, he told Sky Sports 2: "Not at all. Every time I play a game I put it behind me as soon as it's finished.

"Sometimes it's one of those days and today I put it right.

"I'm happy with my hat-trick but tomorrow we move on."

Bendtner, who was on the scoresheet after just 10 minutes, added: "It was good to score early but I don't know if that affected my game."

Arsenal also scored excellent goals through Samir Nasri and substitute Emmanuel Eboue to round off an impressive attacking performance.

"It will give us a lot of confidence," said Bendtner. "We want to win the Champions League. It's something we haven't done.

"We scored all our chances which is very positive."

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was understated in his praise of the Dane.

"I hope it will not give him too much confidence," he said.

"It's good for him. He played well on Saturday but missed chances.

No more penalties for Ronaldinho

Ronaldinho will no longer be allowed to take penalties for AC Milan after missing his third spot kick of the season.

The demotion comes after the Brazilian missed his penalty against Atalanta over the weekend - bringing his tally up to three.

Apparently coach Leonardo has had enough. According to reports in the Italian publication La Repubblica - veteran midfielder Andrea Pirlo will be assigned penalty taking duties moving forward.

This news caps a bad few days for 'Dinho - after he enjoyed a comeback into the spotlight on the back of some sizzling performances, most notably against Manchester United in the Champions League round-of-16 tie in February.

Jamie Carragher would have "no problem" moving to another club if Liverpool decide not to offer him a contract extension.

The 32-year-old defender will have a year remaining on his present deal when this season finishes, and there are no negotiations currently taking place about a renewal.

That could change in the summer, as Liverpool are keen to let Carragher focus on playing before looking at his future.

But Carragher, who has spent all of his career so far at Anfield, acknowledges there may come a time when he has to search for another club.

"The club will give me a new contract if they want to," he told the Sunday Times.

"If not it doesn't matter, I'll still play my best and if I have to move then I'll move, no problem. It wouldn't bother me."

Carragher famously quit international football in 2007 after becoming frustrated with limited opportunities in the England team, and stresses he is "not scared of making big decisions".

"It's a club thing," he said. "It's down to them. I'll keep playing and see where it takes me."

Only Dirk Kuyt and Lucas Leiva have made more appearances than Carragher for Liverpool in the Premier League this season, suggesting the club still rely heavily on their vice-captain.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said: "There is no news about Carragher. We have spoken to him and he was very clear that at this moment he just wants to concentrate on doing his job.

Wenger: Walcott will come good

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has no doubts that Gunners forward Theo Walcott will come good for England.

Walcott, who turns 21 next month, has seen his progress this season hampered by injury.

However, after a return to the Arsenal team, Walcott was called up to the England squad for the friendly against Egypt, and started at Wembley on Wednesday night before being replaced by Shaun Wright-Phillips after an ineffectual display.

Walcott - who smashed a famous hat-trick in the qualifier against Croatia at the start of last season - admits he cannot rely on past glories to make sure of his place in Fabio Capello's final 23-man party for South Africa.

Wenger, though, feels the former Southampton man - a shock inclusion in the last World Cup squad four years ago - is on the right track, despite being an easy target for critics.

"I believe for a while maybe people expected too much of Theo and now they are too hard with him," said the Arsenal manager.

"I believe Theo will be a great football player, he is very young, he will be 21 this year, he will have a great future.

FA Cup Quarter-Finals Review

Holders Chelsea, Aston Villa and Portsmouth confirmed their spots in the semi-finals of this season's FA Cup.

On Sunday, goals from Frank Lampard and controversial captain John Terry gave Chelsea a 2-0 victory over Stoke as they booked a semi-final clash against Aston Villa.

Lampard had put the holders in front in the 35th minute when he fired a rising 20-yard shot into the net and Terry sealed victory 22 minutes from time with a firm header.

After two successive defeats, title hopefuls Carlo Ancelotti's side returned to top form and they were drawn with Villa in the last four after Martin O'Neill's men remained on course for a second Wembley final of the season.

Hat-trick hero John Carew inspired a second-half fightback as they came from 2-0 down to beat Reading 4-2.

The Royals had already knocked out Premier League sides Liverpool and Burnley and a third scalp appeared imminent after Shane Long marked his return from suspension with a two-goal blast during the opening 45 minutes.

Brian McDermott's side were the better team, with Jimmy Kebe in particular causing problems down the right flank and the Villa defence looking unusually nervy.

But Villa turned the tie on its head in dramatic fashion with three goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half through Ashley Young and two from Carew.

Then, in injury time, Carew completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after being brought down by Ivar Ingimarsson.

On Saturday, Portsmouth earned a trip to Wembley after Frederic Piquionne fired them to a 2-0 victory over Birmingham.

Pompey, saddled with debt and being pursued by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, will earn more than £600,000 in prize money and broadcasting fees for reaching the FA Cup semi-final but money was hardly on their minds as they celebrated victory against Alex McLeish's men.

Piquionne's goals brightened up a tie short on action until he struck in the 67th and 70th minutes, though Liam Ridgewell thought he had scored for the Blues late on only for the officials to deem his header hadn't crossed the line.

Before that, there was little to do for the two England goalkeepers on display, with David James looking to re-establish himself as Fabio Capello's first choice and Joe Hart tipped as a future number one.

Fulham and Tottenham must try again after their quarter-final at Craven Cottage ended goalless.

Heurelho Gomes was the busier of the keepers but, in a game of few clear-cut chances, neither manager could have much complaint about the 0-0 scoreline.

Zoltan Gera came closest to settling the tie at the first time of asking, but his close-range header was well saved by Gomes diving to his left.

Man United favourite to land Cole

Manchester United could swoop for Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole on a free transfer if his contract impasse is not resolved.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to take advantage from the well-publicised contract stalemate between Cole and Chelsea and sign Cole on a free - just as he had signed Michael Owen earlier this season.

It has been reported that Cole had wanted a pay raise and this has been the main stumbling block in him agreeing to sign a new deal with the Blues.

Cole has been struggling to make England's World Cup squad after a cruciate knee-ligament injury. He is now fit again but has failed to re-establish himself at Chelsea under manager Carlo Ancelotti.

And his contract talks have stalled, with Chelsea said to be unwilling to increase the midfielder's wages from £80,000-a-week to in excess of £100,000.

According to reports from England, there are also interest from Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City, but it is believed Ferguson will be favourite to win the battle if Cole and Chelsea can't reach an agreement.

Manchester United are reportedly set to make a shock summer move for Chelsea's midfield maestro Joe Cole, with the Blues set to replace him with American midfielderLandon Donovan.

According to the Sunday People, the Premier Leaguechampions are in negotiations with the Blues over a move for Cole who is out of contract in the summer, and has seen recent contract negotiations at Stamford Bridge stall.

The tabloid claims Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to follow last summer’s free transfer swoop for Michael Owen with a similar move for the England international.

The United boss is believed to be an admirer of the 28-year-old and may finally get his man, with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich reportedly unwilling to sanction a new deal for Cole having watched him struggle to regain his best form after a long injury lay-off.

Barca's Toure looks to Valencia clash

Barcelona's Yaya Toure switched his attention to the clash with Valencia after his side dropped two points at Almeria.

The reigning champions were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterraneos after twice trailing and also playing with a man less for the final half-hour following Zlatan Ibrahimovic's dismissal.

That draw was a setback for Barca, who subsequently lost top spot to arch rivals Real Madrid following their 3-2 win over Sevilla late last night, but Toure was keen not to dwell on it.

"It was a very difficult game, above all due to the good performance of our opponents. Now we need to work hard and prepare for next Sunday's game against Valencia, which is also very important," the powerhouse midfielder said.

"The draw isn't so bad, especially after the sending-off."

The match was blighted by some bizarre refereeing decisions from Carlos Clos Gomez.

Clos Gomez delayed the start of the match for almost a quarter of an hour as he was unhappy with Almeria's shirts, which showed a message of support for Chile following the recent earthquake and tsunami.

The official then harshly sent off Barca coach Pep Guardiola and Ibrahimovic, and incorrectly awarded a free-kick to the Catalan giants which led to their first equaliser.

Arsenal and Manchester United both won their games against Burnley and Wolves to keep the heat on Chelsea.

Arsene Wenger's side took the lead in the 34th minute through Cesc Fabregas but Burnley levelled in the 50th minute when David Nugent pounced to make the most of some hesitancy in the home defence.

Arsenal grabbed a second 10 minutes later when England winger Theo Walcott took a pass from Nicklas Bendtner to put the Gunners ahead. Andrey Arshavin completed the scoring in added time to leave Burnley rooted just one place off the bottom.

In the afternoon's only other game, Bolton leapfrogged West Ham with a fine 2-1 success over their struggling rivals at Upton Park.

Bolton had not won on the road since last September but Owen Coyle's side were two ahead inside the first 16 minutes when goals from Kevin Davies and Arsenal loanee Jack Wilshere stunned the home side.

West Ham tried to fightback but Alessandro Diamanti's 84th minute strike was too little too late for In the day's last game, Manchester United were made to work hard for their win over Wolves at the Molineux.

In fact, the hosts had the better of the chances in the first half and only poor finishing on their part let United off the hook. The second half saw much of the same and a draw seemed to the most likely result when a defensive error costs Wolves a goal and ulimately the match.

Antonio Valnecia sent in a skiddy ball to Nani at the edge of the box who crossed it in aimlessly. However, it fell to Wolves' Jody Craddock who could not control it and the ball bounced off his legs into the path of Paul Scholes.

The veteran midfielder finished calmly to bring up a his century of goals for the Red Devils.

Wolves had a marvellous opportunity to grab a point in extra time when substitue Sam Vokes found himself three yards from goal with the ball at his feet.

Fergie: Rooney a doubt for Milan game

Wayne Rooney could miss the second leg of Manchester United's Champions League clash with AC Milan on Wednesday night.

Rooney aggravated a knee injury after playing all but four minutes of England's friendly win over Egypt, and that kept him out of United's game against Wolves.

Now Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson claims it could also keep him out of their midweek European tie.

Ferguson left Rooney out of the Carling Cup final starting line-up last weekend, and was unhappy that he was not either rested or withdrawn for the national squad in midweek after being forced to play nearly an hour against Aston Villa.

Fergie: Rooney a doubt for Milan game

Wayne Rooney could miss the second leg of Manchester United's Champions League clash with AC Milan on Wednesday night.

Rooney aggravated a knee injury after playing all but four minutes of England's friendly win over Egypt, and that kept him out of United's game against Wolves.

Now Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson claims it could also keep him out of their midweek European tie.

"It wasn't looking good from when he got back on Thursday - his knee was swollen," said Ferguson before the clash at Molineux.

"He's a doubt for Wednesday now, which is a bigger problem for us."

"Fabregas will stay with Arsenal"

Francis Cagigao, an Arsenal scout, believes that Cesc Fabregas will stay with the Gunners beyond this summer.

Cagigao recommended Fabregas to the north London club as part of his duties to scout out talent in Spain and Portugal, and was awed by the then 15-year-old midfield dynamo.

"All the fuss about Barcelona and Fabregas is simply an invention of the press, to engage in this type of speculation is absurd," he told the Daily Mail.

"Even when he was 15 I was captivated by his intelligence. He was mature which is hard to find in young players.

"It seems he has GPS in his head."

Fabregas has already gone on record to say that Barcelona boss Josep Guardiola was his childhood idol, and Cagigao believes Gunners boss Arsene Wenger operates in a similar fashion.

"I think the philosophies of Wenger and Guardiola are similar in shaping what they want on the field," he added.

Inter Milan eye Gerrard capture

Inter Milan will make a new bid for Liverpool's Steven Gerrard once Jose Mourinho extends his Inter contract.

According to Il Corriere Dello Sport, Mourinho has been an admirer of the England midfielder's qualities ever since the Portuguese took charge at Chelsea.

It has been reported that Inter president Massimo Moratti wants to extend Mourinho's contract from 2012 to 2013 and increase his wages to €13m per year.

Once Mourinho signs on the dotted line, he will be given funds to strengthen the squad.

First on the list will be Gerrard, who was linked with the Serie A club last summer.

Gerrard has always insisted he will stay at Anfield but recent poor results and the financial turmoil at Liverpool could force him out of the club.

Spain served notice of their World Cup credentials with a 2-0 win in France in the pick of Wednesday evening's friendlies.

David Villa's cool finish, his 36th goal in 55 international games, was added to in first-half injury time by defender Sergio Ramos' deflected strike.

Ramos' Real Madrid club-mate Gonzalo Higuain scored the only goal in Argentina's 1-0 win in Germany. The striker seized on a rush of blood from home keeper Rene Adler and rounded him to score, Juan Veron almost adding a second when he was narrowly off target with a 45-yard effort.

England came from behind to beat African Nations Cup champions Egypt 3-1. Mohamed Zidan's well-taken opener gave the visitors a deserved half-time advantage at Wembley.

But a brace from Peter Crouch, either side of fellow substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips' effort, earned England an ultimately comfortable win in their first match since John Terry was stripped of the captaincy.

Manchester United takeover plan confirmed

The 'Red Knights' have confirmed their intention to try to oust the owners of Manchester United.

Sickened by the huge amount of debt the Glazers' took on to complete their controversial takeover in 2005, the Red Knights are intent on launching a takeover bid.

Described as a group of "high net worth individuals", the Red Knights include Jim O'Neill, chief economist at Goldman Sachs and a one-time friend of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Although plans are at a very early stage and no contact has been made with the Glazers, who have always stressed they are not interested in a deal, a meeting in London yesterday between the key individuals involved in the Red Knights project went through various scenarios and will now look at formulating a plan to raise in excess of £1billion.

"We can confirm that a group of high net worth individuals, who support Manchester United (known as the "Red Knights"), met in London yesterday," a statement released on behalf of the Red Knights read.

"This group is supportive of current management but are looking at the feasibility of putting together a proposal to be put to the Glazer family regarding the ownership of Manchester United.

"These discussions are in early stages and no contact has been made with the Glazer family."

Leading football deal-maker Keith Harris is also involved and has previously suggested some kind of boycott may be required to reduce United's current profits and wreck the Glazers' present business plan.

There is certainly a groundswell of opinion against the Glazers and the current "Green and Gold campaign" so in evidence at Wembley on Sunday has proved incredibly popular.

As a starting measure, the Red Knights are urging supporters to join the Manchester United Supporters Trust, which has been vehemently opposed to the Glazers from day one.

"For such a proposal to be viable it would require the involvement and support of Manchester United supporters worldwide," the statement continued.

"The Red Knights have been liaising with the Manchester United Supporters Trust and their representatives attended yesterday's meeting.

"As a first step, the Red Knights want supporters to demonstrate their commitment by joining the free online membership of the Supporters Trust, www.joinmust.org.

"Any new ownership model would aim not only to put the club on a sound financial footing, but would also aim to put the supporters at the heart of everything the club does."

Duncan Drasdo, chief executive of MUST, welcomed Tueday's news.

He said: "I can confirm that we were present at the 'secret' meeting of the Red Knight Group yesterday and have been involved in discussions for some time.

"This development is hugely welcome as there is a genuine desire to see a change of ownership at Manchester United.

"Initially the Red Knight Group has effectively set a challenge to Manchester United supporters to demonstrate they wish to see an alternative ownership proposal developed.

"In the first instance supporters are being asked to do this simply by joining the free online membership of the Supporters Trust (MUST) and swelling its ranks to an initial target of at least 100,000.

"It is also essential for a majority of two key groups, the Old Trafford season ticket holders and those with executive facilities, to show their appetite for participation by joining the MUST online campaign."

Arsene Wenger set for landmark
When Arsene Wenger walked into English football with that statuesque gait and professorial manner the headlines were unanimous: 'Arsene Who?'
On Thursday, Wenger clocks up 4,749 days in charge of Arsenal, eclipsing the reign of George Allison in the 1930s and 1940s to become the longest-serving manager in the club's history.
On the way he has won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and taken Arsenal to the Champions League final.
Unquestionably he is the most successful foreign manager to have plied his trade in English football. He is also the most articulate, the most astute, the most obsessive, the most stubborn and, some would say, the most short-sighted.
You could count on the fingers of one hand the times Wenger has actually admitted seeing the on-field indiscretions of his own side and that is during 13 years in which 76 red cards have been handed out to Arsenal players.
He has also defended players such as Patrick Vieira against the indefensible and had running battles with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson which down the years must have produced enough column inches to stretch around the coastline of Great Britain.
But no-one has done more to enhance the pleasing nature of the 'Beautiful Game.'
No teams have played prettier and more intricate patterns than Arsenal. No sides have embraced the notion of football as a thinking man's game.
It did not exactly start that way. On Day One he strode into Highbury and shrewdly recognised the worth of meticulous organisation and the solidity of a defence which included captain Tony Adams, Steve Bould, Nigel Winterburn and Lee Dixon.
All ageing, all past their best. All who might have been moved on swiftly by another coach. But all Arsenal through and through and prepared to give the last drop of sweat and blood, if necessary, for the cause. And, more importantly, for a manger they knew little about.
They became the foundations of the Wenger dynasty, one to which he added fripperies as the years went by.
Wenger's greatest quality, however, is his ability to spot bargain talents who fit into the Arsenal way. From Vieira, a snip at £3.5m from AC Milan in 1996, to Robert Pires, a £6m bargain from Marseille in 2000 to current playmaker Cesc Fabregas, who cost nothing from Barcelona in 2004.
It is also his ability to build a team around men such as Thierry Henry, £10m in 1999, who was converted from a winger with potential into the striker supreme.
Cristiano Ronaldo might be some people's idea of the greatest player to grace the Premier League for his 42 goals in a single season, but surely no-one lit up the league as consistently brilliantly for as long as Henry.
No, Wenger does not share a drink with other managers' at the end of the match. He has become increasingly tense and eccentric on the touchline in recent years - note his Basil Fawlty impressions - as his attempt to topple Manchester United and Ferguson increasingly has failed.
There is little love lost between the two even now, with Wenger weeks from turning 60 and Ferguson nearer to 70.
Until Wenger is able and prepared to spend on the scale of United and Chelsea, however, it is unlikely Arsenal fans will celebrate another league title anytime soon.
For fans that must be frustrating. For Wenger, however, it will always be about managing his way to success rather than buying it and in a world where money rules and often ruins everything that is commendable.
His greatest success? Arsenal's 'Invincibles' who went unbeaten in the league in 2004, a feat which might never be repeated.
His biggest let-down? Two actually. Losing 2-1 to Barcelona in the Champions League final of 2006 and being dismantled by Manchester United in the semi-final at the Emirates last season.
It is that inabilty to land Europe's top trophy which stands in Wenger's way of greatness.
No-one, however, can deny Wenger was the trailblazer for a coterie of foreign managers such as Jose Mourinho, Gerard Houllier, Rafael Benitez and Carlo Ancelotti who have brought colour and rich variety to the Premier League. Without Wenger they might never have come.
That perhaps is his greatest gift to English football.
